Cupping involves the application of cups to the skin and then creating a suction to the tissues.
This suction creates a negative pressure within the tissues, producing a decompression and a separation/ lifting of the superficial tissues.
Based on Chinese medicine this application of cups to the skin is thought to help tissues heal by removing energy blockages and drawing toxins closer to the surface, revitalising and restoring blood flow to these areas.
“When energy flows , illness goes”
Within our clinic I have found it very useful for-
Sports injuries
Releasing tight tissues and trigger points – very good for tight calves, tight hips and shoulder issues.
Reducing muscle spasm
Reducing pain
Improving joint mobility and range of movement in the tissues
I generally will use it along with other forms of manual therapy such as massage and joint mobilisations.
As part of this treatment it is very common to bruise but this is part of the process. . The tighter the tissue and the longer you have had the injury the more likely you are to bruise.
Cupping also can look painful but the sensation you get with this treatment is more of a pulling on the skin.
